It's true that the novel is a little too long in places but with tgid spanning three decades and the inclusion of additional references from Thatcher's government to New Labour under Gordon Brown it really helps highlight the passage of time. Martina has the skill of creating characters that drive you crazy. Love and hate are so close in emotion and I felt this a lot with Aidan. I loved the way he fought from a young age to provide for his family as essentially the man of the house, to make a name for himself and ensure that his family was taken care of. What I didn’t like were how the power slowly starts to corrupt him and with that comes unsavoury behaviour towards both his girlfriend and his family. While this book was a little slower then the first book in the 'DI Kate Burrows' series, this was still a great read! Yes it took me a little while to read this one as it was very slow-paced in parts but it made up for it in between! The plotline as a whole is disturbing, compelling, gripping and just heart-racing!

The story takes a little while to get going but once the dynamics have been established it helps make the final third much more impactful. BETRAYAL is the second book of Martina’s I have read (I read THE TAKE early last year) and I cannot wait to devour more of her titles. There’s something about the raw, grittiness of the worlds she creates that pulls you in and pops you right in the middle of it.

This allows us to understand their motivations, simple as they may be. There is no real plot, so if you aren't interested in lots of swearing and EastEnders type family rows, it's not for you. I am in agreement with some other reviewers on here. How anyone can read this book and give it 5 stars is beyond me. I like a good thriller/crime story and this is none of the above. finally, i’d just like to point out that the author (a white woman) used a racial slur for no visible reason, where it could be easily omitted. Cole is one of the worst writers I've read in a while. The only style she has to speak of is a tendency to repeat herself and treat the reader like an idiot. Yes, Ms. Cole, I can remember what happened two chapters ago, thank you; there's no need to keep reminding me. She has no idea what characterisation or character development are. Her characters don't learn or grow; they're the same from start to finish.
