About this deal

The main reason why this developer is still on the shelves today is because of just how good the results are with faster films. Which I’ve found to be true in my own use as well — the day that I truly started loving Ilford Delta 3200 was the once I started developing it with DD-X. The results were stunning compared to what I was used to getting with HC-110. Our liquid concentrate developers are easy to use/mix and fit into 3 categories - those for spiral/deep tank processing, those for machine processing (as in labs), and specialist developers. Spiral/deep tank processing developers ILFOTEC DD-X If you’ve looked at developing times on the Massive Dev Chart, you’ll have certainly noticed there is a developer called Ilfotec DD. DD is actually the same developer as DD-X, though it is formulated for use in labs where it’s possible to replenish the developer after each use.

This developer is designed for use in dip and dunk replenished processors. It is used in conjunction with ILFOTEC DD starter. The chemistry can be replenished, has a long tank life and a good resistance to contamination. It is available as a 1L item, with a 5L replenisher item available too. It is used at a 1+4 dilution. ILFOTEC RT RAPID For use you dilute the liquid concentrate normally at 1+9 for one-shot use at 20 degrees C. For greater economy they can be used with many films at a higher dilution of 1+14 with only a small trade off in image quality. Full unopened bottles will keep for a year and opened for four months. Powder developers require a little more time and care to prepare compared with liquid developers. We generally recommended these for photographers who are already comfortable with using chemistry. Once you are familiar with handling powder chemistry, they can be more economical to use. This developer enables fine grain and excellent sharpness. It is a one-shot developer (i.e. can only be used once whereas others can be re-used). It is a developer which needs to be used relatively soon after being opened so is good for users who have a lot to develop or are regular developers. This is available as a 500ml item and used at 1+9 and 1+14 dilutions. This product is also available in a pre-measured sachet under the name ILFORD SIMPLICITY Film Developer. ILFOTEC LC29 This developer is for use in roller transport machines and short leader card processors. It is used in conjunction with a starter. The chemistry can be replenished and is available as a 1L dev/starter item, with a 20L dev/replenisher item available too. Mixing as advised for the kit part A and B bottles - either 1+1+2, or 1+1+5. Specialist liquid developer PHENISOLI’m not going to lie – I knew, or made an educated guess, that the results would differ – but I wasn’t sure they’d be super noticeable. I’ve developed hundreds of rolls of film over the last couple of years, and DD-X has been by far my favorite developer for most of that time. The results that this solution gets are second to none with faster films, which is one of the major reasons why I almost always keep a bottle of it on my shelf to this day. A single 1L bottle isn’t that expensive, but when you consider that it requires a 1+4 dilution, that means you’re only getting 10 cycles out of a single bottle. For example, Rodinal, which usually comes in a 500ml bottle at a cheaper price, can develop up to 50 rounds, totaling 100 rolls of 35mm film — all in a solution that doesn’t expire over time. That’s why I always recommend Rodinal (or Blazinal in Canad) to be the first film developer for new film photographers.

The low solvent action and enhanced shadows make this especially useful for fast films like Ilford Delta 3200, where it will reduce the grains just enough to have a pleasing appearance without eating the grains and lowering the film’s speed. But film developers all perform a little bit different. Some of them can make dramatic changes in the look of your images. DD-X is one of the most common, and most expensive developers on the market.

Note - this developer is also suitable for processing sheet film (1+9 or 1+19). A 1L bottle at a 1+9 dilution will enable 100 10x8" sheets of film to be processed. HARMAN WARMTONE The last downside is that DD-X is not an environmentally-friendly chemical. Like most developers, DD-X made from the phenols dimezone and hydroquinone, which come from the petrochemical industry. It’s not safe to place in a septic tank and is known to be toxic to aquatic life downstream. This developer offers good performance with all our darkroom paper products. It's easy and economical to use, has good keeping properties (can typically be reused) and gives a neutral image tone. It is available as 500ml, 1L and 5L items. Perhaps the best part about using DD-X, is that it gives users the maximum amount of tonality on their negatives. That means that the negatives will look relatively flat when compared to other developers like Rodinal or pyro-based developers. But in return, you’ll get negatives that can be edited to create the desired level of contrast. Used for processing scientific products such as glass plates however, it is also the optimum developer to process our Ortho Plus film product and can be used to process sheet films. Depending on development time chosen, it will enable varying contrast levels to be achieved. It is suitable for spiral tanks and trays and available as a 5L item. It is used at a 1+4 dilution. Simplicity

Maybe Ilford Ilfosol-3 Developer is the one for you – especially if you’re shooting on plastic cameras. Ilfotec DD-X is the best developer for developing B&W film that is ISO 400 and above. This liquid-concentrate developer enhances shadow details, and creates images with rich tonality, making it one of the top options for pushing film without creating overly-grainy images.

Specification:

Ilfotec DD-X is one of the very best film developers for pushing film. This developer is the perfect balance between solvent action (reducing the size of grains) and shadow enhancement. Some developers are made for commercial lab equipment such as replenished deep-tanks or machine film developers. As such they need high-output, maximum economy, fast processing speed and consistent quality. For most general users, including beginners, you will need a film developer that is compatible with spiral tanks or rotary processors.
