About this deal

The book opened my eyes about the slave trade because I had heard of it before but didn’t realise just how serious it really was. Then there is the antagonist (The Shadow) who we do not find out the name of until much later in the story. I was hooked from the outset as Williams expertly takes the real life historical figures of two black Georgians Lizzie Sancho and Dido Belle and imagines them tackling a mystery of an attempted onstage murder! And when their eyes meet in the audience of the Drury Lane theatre one night, both girls are sure they’ve seen something suspicious on stage. The girls’ background is skilfully portrayed, with Lizzie in particular slowly becoming aware of the part her mother, father and sister Frances are playing in the underground movement the Sons and Daughters of Africa.

There are plenty of twists and turns, and just when you think you have almost figured out who did it, the author throws in another surprise.Set in 1700s London, Lizzie and Belle meet unexpectedly but find they both have inquisitive minds and love solving mysteries so when Lizzie's Dad (the first black man to take to the stage in Othello) narrowly survives an attempt on his life, the girls are determined to investigate, despite all of the ways society and other people try to stop them. The next instalment The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries: Portraits and Poisoning is coming soon and I cannot wait to read it. I heard about this adventure novel in a school reading list and I was told if I enjoyed Murder Most Unladylike then I would enjoy this.

All through the story, the reader also finds clues about African history, slavery and the situation of Black people in Georgian London. A phan mae tad Lizzie, sy’n actor, bron yn cael ei ladd gan siandelïer sy’n cwympo, mae’r ddwy yn gwybod nad damwain oedd hyn.

From the descriptions of the Jamaica Coffee House to the candle lit theatre chandeliers Georgian London is vividly brought to life.

I loved the style of the illustrations, they fit the book’s theme very well and I was drawn to this book by its colourful and intriguing cover. Children are launched into the world of Georgian London and follow the burgeoning friendship and investigation of Lizzie and Belle who are determined to solve this mystery. I think this book has a great balance of humour and seriousness, which is perfect when writing a good book. The representation was good, especially for a younger audience to read about and I liked the characters and story. To access your ebook(s) after purchasing, you can download the free Glose app or read instantly on your browser by logging into Glose.Set in eighteenth-century London, with all the fun and zest of Hamilton, Bridgerton fashion and inspired by real Black British historical figures. My favourite moment in the story was very close to the end, when the mischievous duo tricked their enemy! I have been a blogger for a few years now and I love to be able to read and review books for you all to look at.

Her skin was deep brown, almost as dark as mine, and the tight curls of her hair were gathered up in a bun on top of her head. Williams studied English Literature at Cambridge University before becoming a primary school teacher. The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries: Drama and Danger is a children’s story suitable for 8 -12 years of age and above. On the other hand, if Belle was the narrator, it wouldn’t have shown all of the family events that Lizzie goes through. The main protagonists are two young girls (Lizzie is twelve) who become detectives and try to solve the mystery behind an attack on Lizzie’s father at the theatre.
