The Monopoly World Championships are an important (though lighthearted) competition. Many people compete at regional and national levels to earn a shot at the grand prize of being named the greatest Monopoly player in the world. Of the fourteen world champions, only two have been from the United States. Those victories came in the first two tournaments where there were only four players at each, three of whom were from North America! In 2015, a total of 28 competitors played in three one-hour, non-seeded, randomly-drawn rounds of the competition.

Hasbro hosts an annual Monopoly World Championship. Once every four to six years, with increasingly longer intervals between tournaments since the inaugural one in 1973.The semi-finals were ranked, and they lasted for 75 minutes. The results of the first round were used to determine the following:

The original plan for the Monopoly World Championship was to hold it once a year. Competitions were conducted regularly until 1975, but then they tapered off. The winners of each semi-final advanced to the final to play a 2-hour timed match, although it only actually lasted for 47 minutes. Players who make it through local and national tournaments generally have a different style to more casual players, and the Championship Edition helps to introduce these to newer or more relaxed players.

There have been fourteen different MONOPOLY World Championships, the most recent being the 2015 World Championship, which took place in Macau on September 8th of the same year. Nicolo Falcone took home USD 20,580 for his victory in the 2015 Monopoly World Championships, the same amount of money in the game since it was updated in 2008. In terms of continents, this means that the World Championships have been held in North America 8 times, Europe 4 times, and Asia twice. The rules of the Monopoly Championship Edition mirror standard Monopoly and the game includes a Speed Die. Following the award presentation, you’ll be asked to remain in your team until a member of the game team lets you know you can leave. This is to ensure a safe, staggered exit from the building.
