About this deal

Margery and Clementine are dinner ladies, or to give them their official title 'Education Centre Nourishment Consultants' (really?

The Dinner Lady Detectives by Hannah Hendy | Waterstones

Small Town people see the Big Town - London especially, I was wondering why with this people have a grudge over the people in a big city like London. I’ve read the first instalment of The Dinner Lady Detectives and loved this (the review is on my insta page) and when I saw this one on Netgalley, I had to request it! DNF at 5%, some may say I didn’t give this book a chance but if you’d read the same beginning as me you’d totally see why. Then, there is Margaery, Clementine’s sort of partner in crime because they both live under the same roof, and whatever Clementine does, Margaery always in (even though he always says No but Clementine has her own way to drag her over everything). If you want to mix up your reading style but don't want anything too sinister just yet or too intense, then this is perfect. No absolutely insane twists or anything, but it keeps one guessing (or it kept me guessing, at least), and it wasn't too unrealistic. A slow paced beginning sets up the murder of their kitchen manager, when she is found dead in the walk-in freezer. Best Friends with a different personality, Clementine and Margaery as two cute best friends who have different personalities give me all the feelings.

As the nights grow darker and the mysterious symbols continue to appear around Dewstow, the Dinner Lady Detectives are pulled deeper into the case. Their calm life is shattered when their kitchen manager is found dead in the school's walk-in freezer. While I wouldn’t consider The Dinner Lady Detectives to be a terrible read, I’m afraid I did find it lackluster at best. However, I dislike the writing style because I just don’t get used to this British writing style probably. Clementine is a sort of stubborn old woman who always wants her own way but she takes it in a cute way.In this book, aspects of the generational divide in terms of how everyday life is lived were an interesting part of the story. The storyline about this detective thing did not really give me a thrill for the crime and to an extent, I was amazed by it. It was very surface-level humour rather than anything particularly clever, but it did get the odd chuckle out of me, and I have encountered far worse attempts at humour, and for the most part it was.

I'm a strong believer that stories about LGBTQ people should not need some sort of disclaimer or "coming out" section because they shouldn't be needed in real life. Margery and Clementine are enjoying a peaceful middle-age together in the small, idyllic town of Dewstow, and eagerly awaiting retirement from their work on the front line serving meals to the students at Summerview secondary school. It has the perfect amount of sarcasm, intrigue and mystery that kept me guessing, and If I’m honest, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t put the pieces of the puzzle together. It is described as "a delightful, quintessentially British cosy mystery" and that's exactly what you get.
