About this deal

Aftertaste is short and peppery at first, but then you discover it is still lingering after long time. West Cork seems to have this characteristic sulphury aftertaste of something like, excuse my comparison, motor oil (?) which I really, really love. Morish is a good word? You don't want to stop sipping it, that's for sure. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. Situated inside the imposing former Guinness Power House in Dublin’s Liberties district, Roe & Co. is named after legendary 19th-century whiskey pioneer George Roe and only began distilling in 2017.

I greatly disliked the original Connemara Peated Whiskey the first time I tried it. On the second occasion, about two years later, I still disliked it… greatly. The best Irish whiskey for: Those with an experience palate looking for a very non-Irish-tasting Irish whiskeyPalate: Somewhat less sweet and more malt-forward than the nose, but not much. Biscuit, dried fruit, vanilla, light wood. Indistinct, light mouthfeel. Final Thoughts & Score: Score: 83/100

Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Nose: Fairly indistinguishable from a bourbon, with major caramel, honey, and vanilla. I get just the barest hint of a grainy pie crust note, too, as well as some oak. We’ve reviewed quite a few Irish whiskey bottlings from West Cork Distillers, but this 8 year old single malt may be its best release yet. First up is one of West Cork’s two new U.S. releases, their barrel proof Irish whiskey. It’s an unspecified blend of malt and grain whiskeys, aged in bourbon barrels and bottled at a fiery barrel-strength 124 proof, and sold as a limited release.

The body has notes of orchard fruits, both fresh and cooked with a little vanilla cream and the finish is medium-length with spice and honey.

I’ve no doubt that we’ve unintentionally left out some top Irish whiskey brands from the guide above. The whiskey has precious little in common with the 10 year old single malt we reviewed in 2015, which came across as a fruit bomb overloaded with apple notes. Created in 1829 and later prospering under general manager Daniel E Williams (hence D.E.W. in the name), is the second largest selling brand of Irish whiskey globally. This single pot is made up of pot still whiskeys that have been aged between 7 and 10 years in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks.I’d argue that our next whiskey is one of the most overlooked Irish whiskey brands on the market (and one of the best value price wise!). Triple distilled and carefully crafted using the finest of local ingredients, this one is matured in bourbon casks and is a fine single malt if you can get your hands on it.
