About this deal

This one is easy to apply (make sure you don't overbrush) it dries to an even shine, and lifts the dark colours. Grumbacher is a spray for both oils and acrylics, and is the brand I currently… as you can probably guess by the name, it’s not cheap. The products themselves would give you a good idea of their suitability for a given use/reversibility and if you want to take the time to contact the manufacturers (in case the ingredients are not clearly identified) they can be quite helpful. The more you disturb it by brushing over the same area the more likely you are to form bubbles or lift partially-dried varnish.

Dries clear to a flexible, non-tacky, hard surface, increases brightness and color saturation, adjusts and unifies surface sheen and improves surface durability. It’s best to use a specialist varnish brush but any wide, flat brush of the right length can be used as long as the bristles are not too soft; hog bristle is probably best but there are good synthetic options. To preserve the quality of the surface, we recommend regular cleaning and care using a lint-free cotton cloth. Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish, known around the world, is considered the ultimate in high gloss finish.

First, the painting should be allowed to dry for at least 48 hours before varnishing, in the case of thicker paint longer might be required, especially in humid conditions. If so it might simply be unrealistic for a painting (again, texture in the work will be hard to conceal without a pretty thick coat) but if you paint on a rigid support and permanence isn’t an issue you might consider using what they use on bartops, I’ve seen it used over decoupage so I’m sure it would work over acrylic paint and the finish is incredible. Cass Art, Cass Art London and the Cass Art logo are trade marks and trade names of Art-Line Limited.Used to modify the rate of drying, increase gloss, improve flow or add texture, mediums should be used in moderation as an additive to the colour. We are confident that you'll be impressed by the quality and performance of your Van Son ink but, if you are not 100% happy with your ink purchase, then we will provide you with a refund. I’m not sure but I think Golden might have something on this too, either way you could apply their similar products to much the same effect I’m sure. I can usually smooth the bubbles by dragging through it a few times, but I’m always scared it will start to cloud. VERSATILE - Liquitex Varnish can be used on almost any painting surface, from paper and canvas to wood, leather, silk and plastics.

Suitable for application over acrylic paints both interior and exterior, the coating will also protect against UV damage. Most people don’t realise that your typical water-based acrylic varnish is not really removable from an acrylic painting, Liquitex at least acknowledge this fact by stating their acrylic varnishes are permanent. Yes, you can mix our High Gloss, Gloss, Satin and Matte Varnishes to create your perfect level of sheen. When coating surfaces finished with a coloured varnish, a maximum of 5% of the coloured varnish can be added to the product if necessary. For work with a more compressed tonal range, particularly if the painting is high in key, matt finishes are probably best because you’re not losing much in terms of depth and they cut down on glare as you say. I noticed that one of their products also recommends using an under-coat, or “isolation” coat, of gloss medium prior to the final spirit-based varnish. If you don’t care about removability just go the whole hog and use polyurethane varnish, it’s very tough, much cheaper than picture varnishes and available in water- and spirit-soluble varieties. The larger the picture the wider the brush that should be used, to speed the process and simply for ease – a 4″ brush for large paintings for instance.

I have always applied a thin coat of medium as an isolation coat under whatever varnish I used since reading the advice many years ago, all the current advice seems to confirm it. The spirit-soluble varnishes intended for acrylics are better, much easier to apply and their removal doesn’t generally involve any solvents that work on dried acrylic paint. Depending on your style and technique, there are a wide range of traditional oils, mediums, and solvents to help you control your colour as well as varnishes to protect your work and provide a final finish. So, if you want a high gloss finish on your acrylic painting - factor in an additional week to achieve this. Since most acrylic varnishes are pretty soft and tend to be tacky, and can also can hold a significant static charge, they both attract dust and then hold on to it!

In the former case you have to be careful to prevent friction which leads to the formation of bubbles which can dry inside the varnish layer and are impossible to remove. If you apply a single coat and you’re getting sufficient coverage you’re probably applying it too thickly.
