About this deal

This is one of my tutorials. It’s a bit of a different take on a rag rug. It uses two super fluffy old sweaters and some heavily worn out kid’s play mats. It involves cutting and gluing – no sew, no crochet, no braiding! So, that’s all there is to it. If you’re already familiar with the traditional shaggy form of rag rugging using the Rag Rug Spring Tool then you’ll be whizzing along in no time. We hope you found the tutorial interesting and stay tuned for more short shaggy rag rug creations. Step 2: Preparing the fabric Choose a colour scheme for the trim and execute it across the full length of the trim. I find that basket trims generally look great when you repeat a pattern along the full length. This makes the trim look cohesive and great from every angle.

Trim any excess: After securing the fabric strips along the edges, trim any excess tape or thread to create a neat and tidy finish. Measure and mark: Lay your base material flat on the floor and use a ruler or measuring tape to measure out the desired dimensions for your rug. Mark the measurements with a marker or fabric chalk. The term “peggy mat” comes from the fact that old wooden clothes pegs were sometimes filed down to create suitable prodder-style tools to poke the fabric through with. I’ve seen prodders made from all kinds of materials over the years – horns from rams, “fids” (a tool used to make fishing nets) and even keys. Below are a couple of photos of prodders I have in my collection, which just goes to show how very different they can look… This last one is similar to the yarn pom pom version above in that it uses a rug mat, but this time with cut up rags from old towels.

In the British sitcom Only Fools and Horses the character Uncle Albert claims to smoke his own recipe of " Navy shag and Dutch tobacco".

And that’s all there is to it! How easy is that 🙂 So, it may be easy, but why else should you think about trying the short shaggy technique? Why choose Short Shaggy Rag Rugging? If anyone isn’t convinced they can visit their nearest Victorian museum as these are usually awash with hundred year old rugs without knots. I know I’m labouring the point but I’ve found not everyone is easily convinced on this point. I used to think I had the answer to this problem, which was to offer a hundred pounds to anyone who could find a knot in one of my rugs; until the day when I caught some kid trying to tie his own knot in my rug when he thought I wasn’t looking. So I don’t do that anymore. Incidentally, if you want to know how to make rugs with knots, you can find out in the ”Bits and Pieces” section.

This finger crochet rag rug method is brilliant because it is tool free – you don’t even need a crochet hook to do it! Sustain my Craft Habit has some great links to step by step instructions for both the finger crochet technique and how to prepare your t-shirt scraps into ‘T-shirt Yarn’. You can find the Sustain my Craft Habit project and pointers here. The best way to vacuum a shag rug is by using a canister vacuum with the hose and upholstery attachment: The more gentle suction will keep the rug loops from being pulled too harshly. Rug gripper tape: This tape is used to secure the rug to the floor and prevent it from slipping. It’s an optional but helpful addition to ensure your rug stays in place. Cut the base: Use fabric scissors or a utility knife to cut along the marked lines, trimming the base material to the correct size. Take your time to ensure clean and straight cuts.

With your fabric strips cut and ready to go, it’s time to prepare the base for your shaggy rag rug. The base will provide structure and stability to your rug, ensuring that it stays in place and maintains its shape over time. There are a few different options for the base of your rug, depending on your preference and availability of materials. Optional: Add decorative elements: If you want to give your shaggy rag rug an extra touch of style, you can add decorative elements along the finished edges. Consider attaching tassels, pom-poms, or braided fabric strips to create a unique and personalized look.
