So compelling was this level of experience that Humboldt condemned the excavation of half-buried buildings and viewed the idea of cultivating the campagna as a calamity. Yet so strong was the area’s negative image that the journal L’Artiste in 1844 ignored the evidence of agriculture and claimed it ‘breathes all the melancholy of the Roman countryside’ [ respire toute la mélancolie de la campagne romaine], cited in Marie-Madeleine Aubrun, Théodore Caruelle d’Aligny 1798–1871.

In the seventeenth century the campagna became endowed with a further form of cultural prestige through the belief that it was here that Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin discovered the inspiring raw material out of which they created ideal landscape painting. The landscape around Tivoli had been a popular sketching spot, particularly with Northern artists, since the end of the sixteenth century, and Claude's visits to the Roman Campagna were part of a well- established artistic pattern. Painted for Michael Passart; no longer in his collection by 1684; purchased by Frederick, Prince of Wales; recorded in the 2nd Room, Leicester House in 1749; at Buckingham Palace in 1785 in the King's Dressing Room and in 1819 in the Blue Room. Unlike the majority of Claude's works, the picture has no other subject matter than the drama and beauty of the Campagna - the countryside around Rome. While this might have led to musing on the decline of great empires or encouraged the recollection of descriptions of the area in its heyday, it also prompted questions as to how and why this drastic transformation had occurred.Later in the century, it was precisely the bareness of the ground which was blamed by the French doctor Léon Colin for giving unimpeded access to the city to noxious marsh vapours coming from far and near. Where most of Aurélien's shoes, such as the loafers and driving shoes, are laceless, the Campagna boots have a subtle lace.
