We didn’t expect the DVD release to happen until the start of February, but it looks like Universal Pictures doesn’t want to waste any time.
We first see Santa Claus (David Harbour) in a bar in England getting drunk. It's Christmas Eve and Santa is beyond disillusioned. People have become so greedy and mean-spirited; who can blame him for not wanting to deliver gifts, magic and Christmas cheer anymore? Nevertheless, Santa always gives gifts to those who still believe in him, and kind-hearted Trudy Lightstone in Connecticut still does. Harbour is great as Santa low on goodwill and happy holiday spirits. But, for all his bluster and profanities, Leguizamo is unconvincing as the "main villain." Little Johnny says Christmas ruined his life, so Big Bad Adult Johnny wants to "Kill Christmas." Santa gets beaten up and banged around. He also kills (mostly in self-defense) and has a dirty mouth. But the bad guys (and one girl) get what they deserve, memorably via Christmas lights, on snowmobile and by a nativity scene display.
Other Christmas Classics get shout-outs; most obviously "Die Hard." And Beverly D'Angelo, who plays the Lightstone matriarch here, also played the equally harried but much nicer mother in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."
