About this deal

At times I felt I could see exactly what Fergusson was doing, but I willingly went with it, and was rewarded . Beautifully paced, its strangely lyrical love story picks up speed rapidly and leaves a reader wondering until the final paragraph. Fiercely beautiful, this tender, yet powerfully told story of love and discovery cradles the reader in the most pleasurable way. He began working for a private investigator as an intern while in high school, turned it into his day job in the early stages of his writing career, and still maintains an interest in the firm.

He is wrongly accused of murdering his wife and the plot centres round his struggle to get his life back together. There are a few elements of the plot that don't come as huge surprises when they finally happen but others are much more unexpected.Israel learned the photography trade while in prison and claims that the photos are completely innocent with no ill intent. As well as a poignant love story, it’s also a gripping, original thriller; a final twist I definitely didn’t see coming sets a powerful climax in motion just as the Wall comes down. Israel is instantly a suspect and is interrogated by his corrupt uncle who is the assistant sheriff who has bought half the island. I have some second hand knowledge of life in West Berlin and the social and political environment, physical representations, colour, feeling and smells were all spot on.

The author made Israel Pike and the child he befriended very sympathetic as they were fighting the establishment government of the hometown island. An Honest Man was featured as one of the best novels of 2019 in The Sunday Times, the Financial Times and The Times Literary Supplement. The author who was a barrister himself for over 30 years is able to describe the details of being one of that profession with amazing detail. As the conclusion came, I was still in the grasp of the gritty ending even as I realized what was coming. His relationship with Oz is filled with a young sort of longing, with plenty of awkward flirting (they talk about their favourite pasta shape) and even some tender moments.
